Watch out roses here they come. The long metallic green Japanese Beetles have copper- brown wing covers with a row of white spots on the under wings. These beetles begin feeding on your plants in June and continue for a 4-6 week period until they die off after 30-45 days. These nasty little green beetles feed on 300 species of plants, devouring plant foliage and overripe fruit. Females burrow 2-3 inches in the soil and lay eggs, 40-60 in a lifetime! Eggs hatch and grubs emerge feeding on roots of turf grass and vegetable seedlings. Grubs do best in irrigated home lawns, golf courses and parks. During winter the grub stage of the beetle over winters underground. If you want to control the adult and juvenile stages there are several options to consider. First and foremost, consult your landscape specialist when selecting plants for your garden, there are several varieties of plants that are commonly snacked on by the beetles. Some plants that are prone to beetle damage are Roses, Lindens, Norway and Japanese maple, and Purple-leaf plum. Secondly, there are organic treatments that we carry at Breezy Hill Nursery. St. Gabriel’s Milky Spore is a one time application that you inject into your lawn. This injection can last up to 20 years and kills the grub stage of the beetle with natural bacteria that eats the grub from the inside without harming beneficial insects. Lastly there are many chemical applications that fight the adult stage of the beetle, some examples are Bayer Advanced Lawn, Ortho Bug-B-Gon and Sevin. We don’t suggest using beetle traps; many attract more beetles than are actually caught in the traps results in significantly more damage to your plants. Please feel free to visit our website, should you want more information on this subject or many others. Watch for our future blog posts.

It's easy to forget that trees need watering during dry spells, just like other plants. It is better to water deeply or soak the soil than to water more frequently with less water.
Watch the weather forecast. If rainfall is plentiful, extra water may not be needed. Use a rain gauge or simply place a cup or can in your garden to monitor rainfall and/or your sprinklers. Don't overwater. Too much water, especially in poorly drained areas, may do more harm than good. The best way to water is to place an oscillating sprinkler next to the trunk and water in an arc directed away from the trunk. Mulching and watering should be part of a comprehensive tree care program.

What can I do now to make sure my trees are healthy throughout the summer?
Check your trees for damage that may have occurred due to recent storms.
Check mulch rings to see if additional material needs to be added. If the mulch is less than 2 inches thick, grass growing through it may become troublesome. Enlarge mulch rings whenever possible.
Monitor for insects and diseases. Check your trees and shrubs regularly for any sign of pest activity.
Avoid using herbicides beneath trees that warn against such use on the label. The same herbicides that kill dandelions can hurt trees if they are not applied properly.

Question:
I keep reading about The Care of Trees SoilCare program but I have yet to try it for my own trees. Why should I choose to do this sort of program?
Answer:
Managing trees in urban landscapes should involve working with the tree/soil system. The physical, chemical, and biological components of soils all impact this system. As with human health, we shouldn't just focus on one aspect of care. Exercise, nutrition, diet, mental and physical stress, and disease management are all important. A well-rounded health plan will include managing as many aspects as possible.
The same is true for plant health programs. We use compost teas, but do not rely solely upon them. Teas are never used by themselves alone. They are always combined with other plant health care tactics. While not every program includes every tactic, we can use teas in conjunction with humic acids, kelp extracts, composts, synthetic and natural organic fertilizers, polyamino acids, chelated micronutrients, mulches and physical techniques such as vertical mulching, radial trenching and soil replacement. The use of these tactics can help improve soils by supplying nutrients for plant growth, improving nutrient cycling in the soil and absorption by roots, more biological activity in the soil which can improve soil structure, leading to better water and air movement and root growth within the soil.
Remember too, teas and other natural organic compounds are a method to add organic carbon into the soil. Adding organic matter to the compacted and/or structurally and texturally challenged soils common to urban areas is a recommended practice. Teas are a mix of living microorganisms and organic matter in a liquid form. Compost and mulches add organisms and organic matter in a solid form. Every tactic has advantages and disadvantages. By combining tactics, we can see benefits beyond the benefits or disadvantages of any single tactic.
Nature can improve soil by the addition of organic matter. Teas are one method, but not the only method, for adding organic matter with the goal of improving soil conditions. We utilize teas, but do not expect them to solve all problems. They serve as one tactic among many that we employ at The Care of Trees.

I have a maple tree that was about 30 years old that had a very large limb that split during a storm. It was going to fall on my house if we had another storm. I tried to cut the limb off and it split off bark and a lot of the meat of the tree almost to the ground. It did not split to the heart of the tree. What do I need to do the part that is split off with no bark and part of the meat gone? Spray with something, wash with something??

Due to the recent economic downturn, many home values have decreased to 2003 levels. If you are looking to sell your home in the coming months or year, don’t let this discourage you. By improving your home’s landscape and by tending to the health and appearance of your trees, you can increase curb appeal as well as its value. Consider these facts:
Real estate experts say that mature trees and a well-landscaped yard can improve your home's value by 10 to 25 percent, while poorly landscaped properties detract from the value of the home. (Source: Gardening Examiner)
A mature tree can often have an appraised value of between $1,000 and $10,000. (Source: Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers)
In one study, 99% of real estate appraisers concurred that landscaping enhances the sales appeal of real estate. (Source: Trendnomics, National Gardening Association)
In one study, 83% of realtors believe that mature trees have a "strong or moderate impact" on the salability of homes listed for under $150,000. For homes over $250,000, this perception increases to 98%. (Source: American Forests, Arbor National Mortgage)
If you need help maintaining the mature trees on your property, The Care of Trees can help assess your specific tree care needs. Request a consultation or contact your local office today.

Tree roots are buckling my driveway. I'm speaking of an approximately 60 ft. tall 25 caliper oak tree which stands just five feet from my asphalt driveway. Every season, the tree's roots grow further and further under my driveway. All of the paving contractors assure me that they will remove the roots when they excavate the driveway in preparation for the resurfacing work, but I know better than to simply tear out the roots. How can I save the tree and still have a new driveway without the worry of the roots once again burrowing underneath it and causing it to buckle?
Answer:
Surface roots do commonly cause lifting of asphalt driveways. The question becomes whether or not the roots can be removed, or whether a means to bridge over them should be considered. The decision to remove them depends on several things: tree value, tree health, number of roots involved, budget available, other options available, etc. There is no “one size fits all” situation. It is possible to build wooden decking over the root area so that vehicles can drive over the area without damaging the roots. This will probably add cost to your drive and so may not be a realistic option. Unfortunately, placing a solid driveway over surface roots, using conventional methods, will most likely damage them.
Depending on the situation, removal of the roots may be an option if the number of affected roots is small, or the perceived impact upon the tree is deemed acceptable. Bringing a certified arborist together with a landscape designer/architect who is sensitive to tree issues would be the best scenario. Together, they would be able to evaluate the situation and provide a list of options so you can make a decision that best fits your needs.

This year begins a new decade and many people are starting new resolutions. There are many simple changes we can make to our lives that are better for the environment and can promote a new green year. Here are some easy resolutions that you can start today. Let's strive to make this year a Green 2010!
• Give up plastic and paper bags. Twelve million barrels of oil were used to make the 88.5 billion plastic bags consumed in the United States last year. And it takes four times more energy to make paper bags. Get reusable shopping bags made of cotton, nylon or durable, mesh-like plastic.
• Green your lawn. Check your local nursery for chemical-free, organic lawn care solutions.
• Plant a tree. Planting a tree can reduce your personal carbon footprint and helps to fight deforestation occurring in other parts of the world.
• Compost. You can start a compost pile in your yard or find a compost drop off site in your area, farmers markets are a great bet.
• Use less hot water. 90% of the energy used in a washing machine is used to heat the water. Most clothes will come clean in cold water but for heavily soiled clothing use warm, not hot, water.
• Switch out paper towels for microfiber cloth. Microfiber towels can be washed and reused over and over again and they are great for gripping dirt and dust. If you need to use paper towels, use 100% recycled ones. If every household in the U.S. used recycled paper towels, over 500,000 trees could be saved.
For more information on simple green resolutions that you can commit to, read The Daily Green's and Discovery's Planet Green's articles on green resolutions for 2010.

The winter holidays are all about giving, so why not give back to our friends and family by celebrating in a green way? Here are some tips to make this the season of sustainability.
Buy smart by choosing gifts that are made from recycled sources, locally made, and are battery free.
Lower the energy impact of holiday lighting by using LED lights and timers to make lights turn off when everyone is asleep.
Instead of store-bought cards, make homemade cards or use e-cards. Reuse old cards as gift tags by cutting and writing on the blank side.
Relive past holiday memories by uploading a photo album online through sites like Flickr and Shutterfly to share with the people you care about.
Wrap gifts with recycled papers or reuse gift wrap that is not creased from large packages. Avoid metallic or glossy foils as they are difficult to recycle.
Use candles made from soy, vegetable or beeswax, which are all renewable and biodegradable (try to avoid paraffin wax as it is petroleum based).
Choose a live, potted tree that can be used for many years for the holidays. These can be re-potted as they grow or re-planted.
However you choose to celebrate the season this year, make it green! For more tips visit: http://earth911.com/seasonal/green-your-holidays/

In our recent print newsletter, you may have read how pruning young trees can help to give them direction. Using subordination pruning techniques, tree care professionals help to train trees by creating a strong and central leader. But what happens when trees have missed that opportunity to grow into this stable shape? What happens when trees take on a shape that looks more like a tuning fork than a pyramid?
If you were to extend your arms parallel to the floor, you might be able to hold that pose comfortably for a minute or two. But add a 5 lb weight in each hand and you’ll see what kind of strain that puts on your body. The same sort of pressure occurs when trees are blanketed with large amounts of snow - the weight is focused on the branch attachment point. For some trees that have that tuning fork shape, the pressure can lead to splitting or cracking close to the joint. Arborists have a couple of options to help create conditions that may lower the risk of such accidents.
First, trees that have less than perfect structural integrity can be properly pruned to lessen weight problems or reduce excessive sailing effects caused by heavy winds blowing against the tree. Second, cabling techniques may be employed to effectively extend the useful life of structurally flawed trees.
Under certain circumstances, threaded metal rods, eye-bolts or lag hooks are strategically placed in parts of the main trunk or branches to help support weak branch crotches. The steel hardware used for cable installation is threaded into the wood, never wrapped around the branch or trunk. Knowledge and placement of hardware requires considerable experience as improperly installed braces or cables may do more harm than good. Cables are installed high in the tree so leverage factors are in the tree’s favor. The cable is seldom visually unpleasant.
It is important to remember that cable and bracing systems are not foolproof. Systems must be combined with proper pruning to reduce the risk of failure. Under extreme conditions, trees can fail even where cable and brace systems are in place. Some trees are so flawed that cable and brace systems should not be installed. Also, tree care standards state that cable and bracing systems must be inspected periodically to check for damage and proper function.
If you have trees that you believe to be structurally unsound, contact your arborist at The Care of Trees to determine if a cable and bracing system is appropriate for your situation.

You might notice some trees in your neighborhood that have already begun changing into brilliant shades of red, yellow, orange and purple. But isn’t it too soon for fall leaves? Unfortunately, this question cannot be answered with a simple yes or no.
While different tree species experience changes in leaf color at different times, leaves that change color earlier could be showing symptoms of plant stress.
To determine whether a tree is stressed or not, we would have to compare trees that are of identical species, planted at identical times, and receive identical amounts of sunlight and wind. Since those conditions are rare, we have to look at nearby trees and carefully assess the situation. How are its soil conditions? Does it have a poor root zone? Have we experienced weather conditions that would make tree stress a possibility? Is the tree showing other symptoms of stress? Or are the trees showing natural signs of shutting down before we head into the dormant season?
If you have a tree that seems to be changing colors too soon, call us today to have your certified arborist stop out for an inspection.

The dramatic dining room inspiration was taken from the side board. The walls were painted flat black. Then gold paint was overlaid to give a soft golden glow. The scrolling from the side board was repeated around the top of the walls abutting the crown molding.
The table features a glass top and a pottery base. The chairs are wood with a black diamond pattern in the upholstery. The wood flooring is angled with a black border edging the table. Then the remainder of the wood flooring was laid straight to the walls.
The window treatments are black with different intensities of gold squares. They are gathered at the op and a decorative rosette attaches them to the wall. They are mounted beneath the decorative crown molding.

The master bathroom looks like a spa. With 2 individual sinks and a scrolled shape in the granite countertop to outline the sinks. Soft golds, creams and dark wine colors are used throughout the space.
The whirlpool bath is surrounded by mirrors which add to the natural lighting. All of the flooring and tub surround are porcelain tile. The flooring is laid on a 45 degree angle to match the angled tub in the corner.
The walk in shower is enclosed in clear glass, giving an open airy feeling. Three sconces are above the 2 sinks with beveled, custom designed mirrors adding to all the sparkle.

Many people think of fall as the time when gardening is complete, except for raking leaves and picking the few remaining tomatoes out of the garden. But the reality is quite the opposite. The cool fall weather makes it the ideal time to plant trees and shrubs. Homeowners can get the best return for their landscape dollar during the fall season, with great deals at our garden center. Trees that are planted in the fall suffer less transplant shock, have optimized root growth, and grow more rapidly next spring. Planting trees can also put a little green back in your pocket and help the environment all at the same time. Trees can help reduce energy and water bills, increase your homes market value and contribute to cleaner air. Trees and shrubs can help cool buildings and streets and help reduce heat buildup which contributes to increased ozone levels. Trees and shrubs also provide shelter and food for insects and animals which help continue natures food chain. So to get the best return on your investment (trees and shrubs) make sure to ask nursery staff the right questions…
1. Plant health? Are the leaves alive, is the root ball symmetrical, are the trunk and branches free of holes or any oozing sap.
2. Match your plant to the area? Is it cold hardy, shade or sun loving, is it tolerant of heat, will it be the right size for your area, does it flower or provide fruit
3. Climate considerations? Will is help with energy bills, shade in the summer but sun in the winter months, will it block northern winds.
4. Aesthetics? Will it increase your property value, will it fit with other landscaping you have, can it block unsightly areas or screen neighbors.
Once you have asked all the right questions you should be able to find the perfect tree or shrub for your garden or landscape. Good luck and happy fall planting.
